Twelve township based photographers and photo-students from the Iliso Labantu Photo Group spent two days last week documenting life in one small area of Langa.
A selection of their work will be exhibited this Saturday (the 17th) on the same streets in which it was shot. This is primarily an event to thank the local community for hosting this project but you would be very welcome to come and see what they have produced in such a short space of time.
The exhibition will take place from 10AM until 2PM outside Langa Post Office (opposite the main Taxi rank on Washington Street). For more info call 084 393 3283.
This was the eleventh event in a series known as Flash Photo Weekends, which aim to create a secure and supportive space for young documentary photographers to practice their skills, be mentored by other photo professionals and to create a new body of work for themselves and the wider group.

Iliso Labantu Langa Photo Weekend - Sept 9 -10, 2011
We expect to host about 15 township based photographers and trainees during the two days. They will be linked up with local guides and will be sent out to capture whatever aspects of the defined area they wish to. We will be based at a community center close by where we will download the work as it comes in and then sit with each photographer to jointly edit their work. This really helps them to see what has worked and what has not from their shoots and to push them to define what it is that they want to capture in each image.
We will then build up a collection of the strongest work by each photographer, have them printed and laminated, so that this work can be exhibited the following Saturday morning in the same community where they were created. This is a great way of thanking the local people for hosting this project and to raise self-esteem for the photographers and their subjects!
As usual we are looking for volunteer photographers or media professionals to come along and help with this process. It is a very rewarding experience as you will be passing on some of your technical and creative skills to people who are eager to learn and are in real need of the help.
Langa is quite easy and safe to get to and you are free to come for as long as you are able. Our only stipulation is that you see this as primarily a skill sharing and mentoring event and not an opportunity to shoot your own work.
We will start each day at 9am and finish around 6pm. We provide basic food for the photographers and guides and ask that you bring whatever food you need for yourself, a little extra to share around would be great too! (but not essential)
So let me know via email if you are interested in helping out. It would help me if you can give me a rough idea of when you could come through, so that I can try and spread the mentor input through both days.
